Walkingbook

Summer Lei

“This old building used to be the clinic of Chiang Wei-shui, an activist who used to be a doctor during Taiwan’s Japanese Occupation era. A group of young people renovated it into this beloved contemporary look. The design is also a tribute to this part of Taiwan’s history, one which everybody should know.”

The 41-year-old 4-storey house has been transformed into Walking Book, a multifunctional space combining food, drinks, a library and workplace into one. Select tea from small-scale Taiwanese tea farms, locally brewed beer and roasted coffee from Central and South America can be found on the first floor. Dishes made of Taiwanese ingredients can be found on the second floor. The library on the third floor is a response to Chiang’s prescription to solve social issues during his time over a hundred years ago: “Opening of Libraries”. Also, in response to his contribution to Taiwanese culture, today the library supports indie publication.
